James L. Young, Jr
Areas of Practice: Attorney Young assists clients with estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, Medicaid / Title 19 planning and eligibility, administration of estates and trusts, conservatorship, special needs trusts, residential real estate, and commercial finance. He has been a member of the firm since 1991.
Education: Attorney Young is a native of Shelton, Connecticut, a 1975 Graduate of Southern Connecticut State University and a 1981 graduate of the Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.
Experience and Law Related Activities: After admission to the Oregon State Bar in 1981, Attorney Young served for two years as a Personal Trust Officer in the Trust Department of The Oregon Bank, where he worked with financial advisors, attorneys, accountants, trust settlors and beneficiaries to administer trusts and estates. Prior to that position, he worked for two years as in-house counsel in the legal department at The Oregon Bank. He left The Oregon Bank to take a position at First Interstate Bank of Oregon, where he worked for two years as in-house counsel with responsibility primarily for commercial transactions.
Since returning to Connecticut in 1987, Attorney Young has been entrusted by clients to assist them in achieving estate planning goals and to draft wills and trusts, and assist with probate and estate administration, and conservatorship issues and Medicaid / Title 19 issues, and to represent their interests in residential and commercial real estate matters, and in business dealings.
After graduating from college in 1975, and prior to beginning law school, among other positions Attorney Young worked for a year as an Orderly on a total care floor at The Jewish Home for the Aged in New Haven, which left deep impressions on him about how we care for our elderly and disabled, end of life decision making, and the challenges our elders face, including particularly as residents of long term care facilities.
Attorney Young is a member of National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and the following Sections of the Connecticut Bar Association: Probate and Estate Planning, Elder Law (member of Executive Committee) and Real Estate.
Community Involvement: Attorney Young has resided in Mystic, Connecticut, with his family, for 25 years. He is a past Vice Chairman of the Zoning Board of appeals of the Town of Groton (1995-2000), past Chairman of the Economic Development Commission of the Town of Groton, past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, Inc., and past vice president and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the United Cerebral Palsy of Eastern Connecticut. He is currently a Board member of the Estate and Tax Planning Council of Eastern Connecticut, Inc. He is a member of The Mystic Rotary Club.
Attorney Young greatly enjoys golf, and in the winter, when one can’t golf, downhill skiing.
